Treasure Island: An Immersive Journey of Understanding

Treasure Island invites you to a journey of discovery and understanding around my home: Jeju Island, South Korea.

Curious to understand the culture of my close, but far island neighbors, I immersed myself in the lives of the Jeju Indigenous people.

I uncover the culture, mythology, and ecology of Jeju through the voices of the very people who have grown with the land. I hope that their wisdom, continuing on from ancient times to our present lives, will be passed on to inspire future generations.

Treasure Island Anthropology

From June to August of 2024, I traveled around Jeju Island’s 160-mile coastline, visiting ‘Haenyeo’s Houses’ (Haenyeos' resting places/restaurants that sell seafood) and Haenyeos’ workshops in various fishing communities, to hear the Haenyeo and their families’ stories. I also visited village senior centers, village life support centers, and fishing co-op offices to hear profound and authentic life stories from the Indigenous people, including the families of the Haenyeo. I interviewed over 40 Jeju Indigenous individuals in 20 different locations.
