In the summer of 2024, I traveled around Jeju's 160-mile coastline, immersing myself in the lives of the Indigenous community. To record their stories, I conducted anthropological interviews, analyzed the transcripts, and organized them into this volume.

‘Indigenous Knowledge of Jeju Culture and Ecology’ is the second installment of the Treasure Island Book series. This book presents the Indigenous knowledge that Haenyeos have collected from interacting with Jeju’s natural environment in their work and daily lives. This experiential knowledge includes wild herbs used for diving and housekeeping; insights on marine animals; and the current shifts in biodiversity of the Jeju sea. Further, this book examines the continuity question of the Haenyeo community in light of climate change and urbanization. Environmental factors, such as the declining population of native seaweed and shellfish, the increase in occurrences of invasive species, and chemical pollution, threaten ocean productivity and Haenyeo’s finances.
